But there is no need batteries when attach it to the lantern.
Each flashlight has a front light and side light. The front light is your standard flashlight and on the side light is an LED light that could be used as a nightlight.
Attaching the flashlight to the lantern, you can turn on 4 light (two of them are the side lights of the attached flashlight), or turn on just two lights on the lantern.
